BENGALURU: The BBMP council on Tuesday accepted a proposal by the standing committee on taxation and finance to extend 5% rebate period on property tax payment till June 30. The deadline otherwise was May 31.

BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad told the council that they have revoked a special provision under the KMC Act to extend the rebate period for the third month this financial year.

Mayor BN Manjunath Reddy said he was aware of the problems tax payers were facing, especially after the introduction of the online system and most of the issues were resolved. “Since the updating process got delayed and the problem is from our side, the rebate period has been extended to help tax payers,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Padmanabha Reddy, leader of opposition in BBMP council, highlighted the problem pertaining to online tax payment. “There are still problems while entering details about newly constructed buildings and making payment at bank branches. The civic body should release a handbook on property tax payment to help citizens,” he added.

The mayor said a handbook is being prepared and shall be released soon.
